The Estate
Author, artist, photographer, and philanthropist, Alice Curtis Desmond, along with her husband Senator Thomas Desmond, once called home the historic estate known today as The Alice Desmond Center for Community Enrichment. This prominent couple acquired the property in 1930. The 14-room late Victorian home was designed by famed architect Josiah Cleavland Cady.
Alice was a passionate advocate for the pursuit of knowledge, and upon her passing, donated the estate for the purpose of lifelong learning. The Town of Newburgh Recreation Department honors her legacy by continuing to facilitate enriching adult programs on a broad range of subjects.
